Toronto mayor David Miller promised during the election campaign to "padlock the back doors" of city hall "to the deal makers and influence peddlers."
Imagine his embarrassment when lobbyist Arthur Potts paid $4,500 at a charity auction for an evening with Miller and his wife, watching a hockey game in a donated private box at the Air Canada Centre. Potts has long lobbied the city to end its fair wage policy, which says that non-union contractors with the city must match union wages.
Miller escaped the awkward situation by inviting along another lobbyist, Jay Peterson of the Toronto Building Trades Council, who supports the fair wage policy.
That night, the Leafs lost, but the mayor won.
