It's been more than a year since Canada ratified the Kyoto Protocol, the treaty designed to deal with the environmental causes of climate change.
KyotoSMART, a group of various organizations, industries and governments, wants to monitor the protocol's implementation. The group wants to ensure that Canada follows up on its commitment to enact Kyoto, but also wants to protect employment during the transition to meet Kyoto's targets.
KyotoSMART wants the federal government to produce a plan that allows Canada to lead the way in clean energy, technological innovation and sustainable practices.
The group issued a position paper outlining four key components:
- Ensure that implementation promotes reduction opportunities within Canada, thereby providing all Canadians with the environmental, technological and health benefits associated with emission reductions.
- Promote Canada's transition into the emerging new global, carbon-constrained economy through the advancement of a Canadian emissions trading system that rewards Canadian innovation, supports the competitiveness of Canadian industry and provides incentives for low emission technologies.
- Achieve recognition of early action for emission reductions, or at the very least, not put those sectors that have taken early actions at a disadvantage.
- Ensure fairness in the implementation of Canada's climate change plan, so that all regions, workers, communities and economic sectors equitably share responsibility and economic opportunities.
