Health Canada has contributed $900,000 to a three-year project that will look at traditional Cree medicines used to fight diabetes.
The research, to be conducted in northern Quebec, will focus on the medicinal and curative properties of about a dozen plants, such as blueberry root extract and Labrador tea, which have been used by Cree peoples for centuries.
Preliminary results of tests on lab animals have already shown some of the plant extracts help to control Type 2 diabetes.
