The United Nations says women are much less likely to die in childbirth in Canada or the U.S. than in the Third World.
In 2000, 20 women in Canada died giving birth, a rate of one in 8,700. In the U.S., there were 660 deaths, a rate of one in 2,500.
In the same year in Africa, one in 16 women did not survive her pregnancy.
